Stiff, Achy Joint? It Could be Bursitis

Bursitis is inflammation of the small, fluid-filled sacs called bursae that cushion joints like the elbow, shoulder, hip and knee.

It is often the result of repetitive motion, persistent pressure, injury or conditions like arthritis.

Bursitis symptoms in the affected joint:

  • Achy and stiff
  • Hurts more when touched or moved
  • Looks swollen and red

Initially, treatment typically involves resting the affected joint. In most cases, pain will resolve within a few weeks with proper treatment. However, recurring flare-ups are common.

The risk of bursitis and severity of recurrence can change based on how you complete certain tasks.

Using kneeling pads, strengthening muscles, warming up and stretching before strenuous activities, and taking frequent breaks may all help when engaging in tasks that require repetitive motion.
