Ganglion cysts are fluid-filled lumps that frequently appear along the tendons or joints of wrists or hands and also can develop on ankles and feet. The cysts are usually round or oval and feel like they are filled with jellylike fluid.
Ganglion cysts sometimes can be too small to feel, but the size of a cyst can change, often growing larger with joint movement over time.
While the cause is unknown, Ganglion cysts most often occur in women between the ages of 20 and 40. Individuals with arthritis in the finger joints closest to the fingernails are at a higher risk, as are those with past joint or tendon injuries.
They often are painless, but if a Ganglion cyst presses on a nerve or other structure, it can cause pain, tingling, numbness or muscle weakness. Over-the-counter treatments can assist with pain management, but the persistent presence of the cyst could signal medical treatment is needed.
Treatment may include draining the cyst or removing it surgically.
The fellowship-trained hand and wrist team at KOC offers in-office procedures to remove Ganglion cysts.
