WBIR: KOC Physician Offers Winter Sports Safety Tips

Have you heard of a “snowboarder’s fracture”?
Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic foot and ankle specialist Dr. Mary Crowe said a fracture of the talus is so specific to snowboarders that it’s named for them and can happen when a foot is pulled up and twisted.
Slopes have recently opened at Ober Mountain in Gatlinburg. Dr. Crowe talked with WBIR about how to prevent injuries on the slopes.
Dr. Crowe shared that her kids play ice hockey, so she spends a lot of evenings and weekends rink side. Winter sports can be a fun way to enjoy the season, she said, but make sure you’re fit enough to do the activity and that your gear fits appropriately.
If you do sustain a mishap on snow or ice, first try RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. If that doesn’t resolve the problem, you can visit Dr. Crowe or any of our compassionate orthopaedic specialists who offer effective, patient-centered care.
