Dr. Joshua “Josh” R. Johnson joined Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic in 2013 after completing a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Kentucky. Originally from a farming community in central Kentucky, Dr. Johnson’s perspective of medicine was shaped by the integrated community care provided by a small town family physician. His prior athletic endeavors, current recreational interests and desire to help individuals maintain an active lifestyle led him to pursue a career in sports medicine.
Dr. Johnson provides sideline and training room sports medicine coverage at the professional, collegiate, high school and recreational settings for multiple sports. He has served as the head team physician for the Knoxville Smokies baseball team (Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs) for over ten years and attends Cubs Spring Training each year to provide care for the minor and major league players.
As a fellowship-trained sports medicine physician, Dr. Johnson is able to treat any common or complex injury involving bones, joints, muscles and tendons. He has training in diagnostic and therapeutic soft tissue and joint injections as well as the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound. His formal training in the treatment of traumatic brain injuries through his physical medicine and rehabilitation residency and subsequent certifications in neurocognitive testing give him a strong background for diagnosing and managing concussions. Dr. Johnson’s love of baseball gives him a passion for treating shoulder and elbow injuries in throwing athletes. However, he enjoys treating individuals of all ages, levels and varieties of athletic or recreational activity.
Dr. Johnson met his wife Kelly during their undergraduate studies at the University of Kentucky. Kelly is a Farragut High School graduate, and they moved back to Knoxville to be closer to her family. They have three children: Hallie Grace, Silas, and Micah. All three love participating in sports and attending church activities at First Baptist Concord. Dr. Johnson enjoys coaching his children on the ball field, exercise, and traveling with his family.
