Dr. Gregory Mathien was born in Buffalo, New York, and attended State University of New York in Syracuse for both his undergraduate and medical degrees. He remained in Syracuse to complete his surgical internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at SUNY Health Science Center.

In 1991, Dr. Mathien came to Knoxville for the Sports Medicine Fellowship under the direction of Dr. William T. Youmans. During his fellowship, KOC recruited him to remain as a KOC surgeon and help expand the KOC sports medicine program, enhancing the care of injured athletes. This has evolved into an extensive program placing certified athletic trainers in Knox County high schools. In developing this program he received the Tennessee Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Distinguished Service Award in 2011.

Dr. Mathien has been awarded the 2025 SEC Team Physician of the Year for Orthopaedics. He currently serves as the Senior Team Orthopaedic Surgeon for the University of Tennessee athletic programs. The University of Tennessee Lettermen’s “T” Club has also given Dr. Mathien Honorary Membership status.

Dr. Mathien has served as a consultant for the Knoxville Cherokees and Lincoln Memorial University athletics. He has also operated on and cared for many Olympic medalists and professional athletes. He plays an active role in national sports medicine research, including the Multicenter ACL Revision Study.

With an over 30-year career at KOC, he was asked to be interim Chief Executive Officer of Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic and is now Chief Medical Officer of the organization.

Dr. Mathien is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery with a certificate of added qualification in sports medicine. He is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

He and his wife Clara live in Knoxville with their Labrador retrievers. They have two children. Zachary is a physical therapist and Rebecca is a registered dietician.

Dr. Mathien is also a supporter of Smoky Mountain Service Dogs, providing clinic opportunities to service dogs in training.
