Dr. Chelsea Stanford Discusses Spring Sports & Physicals on WATE

KOC Sports Medicine Specialist Dr. Chelsea Stanford recently sat down with WATE Living East Tennessee’s Amber Lynn Carroll to discuss KOC’s tradition of providing preparticipation physical evaluations (PPEs) as part of the KOC mission to support student-athletes and overall physical wellness in East Tennessee.

KOC has been hosting these physical evaluations for more than 35 years to offer parents a convenient and affordable way to ensure their students are prepared to safely participate in athletics through the summer and upcoming school year.

These physicals give physicians a chance to evaluate students for any lingering injuries from the previous season, as well as a student’s readiness for increased activity. With KOC physicians often on the sidelines during the school year, they are ready to identify and address any potential issues.

In recent years, KOC physicians have noticed an increase in overuse injuries among student-athletes, particularly involving the knees and shoulders. Dr. Stanford emphasizes the importance of prevention. Parents can help by checking in with their kids, making sure they’re enjoying the sport, sticking to a balanced strength training routine, getting enough rest and maintaining good nutrition.

Dr. Stanford is a primary care sports medicine specialist at KOC. She focuses on nonsurgical solutions for bone, joint and muscle injuries in both adult and pediatric patients.
