Dr. Benjamin Weisenthal was drawn to medicine at a young age after experiencing firsthand how surgery can profoundly improve patients’ lives – including his own. At the age of 10, he underwent spine surgery that transformed his quality of life. In high school, he joined his father, an ophthalmologist, on medical mission trips where he witnessed patients arrive blind and leave with restored vision. These experiences inspired his lifelong dedication to surgical care.
A native of Syracuse, New York, Dr. Weisenthal spent a gap year in Chile through the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, where he became fluent in Spanish. He earned his Bachelor of Science in neuroscience from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. After graduation, he worked in the research department at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, which solidified his decision to pursue a career in orthopaedics. He then earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester, where he also worked as a CrossFit trainer and co-authored a book chapter on CrossFit-related injuries.
Read MoreDr. Weisenthal found his professional home in Tennessee during his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. There, he developed a passion for spine surgery through mentorship from leaders in both adult and pediatric spinal care. He then completed a combined Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Adult and Pediatric Spine Fellowship at the Norton Leatherman Spine Institute in Louisville, Kentucky – one of the country’s premier spine centers – where he trained under both board-certified orthopaedic spine surgeons and neurosurgeons.
Dr. Weisenthal encourages patients to exhaust conservative treatments before considering surgical intervention. He is dedicated to techniques that reduce tissue disruption, minimize pain and promote faster recovery. His surgical practice focuses on minimally invasive muscle-sparing spine surgery, including endoscopic spine surgery, anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, lateral and anterior lumbar interbody fusions with percutaneous fixation and minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusions. He treats a wide range of conditions such as cervical and lumbar degenerative disease, spinal deformity, traumatic spinal injuries, revision surgery and spinal tumors.
He is an active member of the North American Spine Society and has authored multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals on cervical myelopathy, surgical techniques, osteoporosis in spine surgery and healthcare economics. He has presented research nationally and was nominated for the prestigious Whitecloud Award for his three-dimensional analysis of pelvic screws.
Outside of work, Dr. Weisenthal enjoys spending time with his wife, Kaycee, a Knoxville native, working out in his home CrossFit gym, trail running, snow skiing and taking long walks with their two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.
