School Nurse Day

The purpose of these evaluations is to meet the requirements for participation as set by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA). We recommend that student athletes also visit their family practice medical provider to obtain a thorough physical examination.

Our evaluation is designed to screen in a cursory way for common causes of injury and sudden death among young, relatively healthy individuals. It is not intended to replace a comprehensive health evaluation by an individual’s primary care physician. The standard exam performed during our evaluation is based upon guidelines set forth by the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Specifically, it does not evaluate conditions detectable only through laboratory or mechanical medium such as urinalysis, blood and serum analysis, ECG, EEG or echocardiogram.

If a health care provider during the exam detects a potentially hazardous condition, recommended participation may be contingent upon further evaluation by the athlete’s personal physician. Under the Americans with Disability Act, no person can be barred from physical activity. However it may be the recommendation of the person or persons performing the exam that sports-related activity might put the student athlete at substantial risk.

Our evaluations may be performed by one or more persons with the following areas of expertise: medical assistants, licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, athletic trainers, physical therapists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, general medical physicians, family physicians, and/or orthopaedic surgeons.
