This coference will help Healthcare Professionals, who work with the athletic population gain valuable knowledge in the following areas of sports medicine: overuse injuries in adolescent runners, ACL injuries, hand and wrist injuries, common foot and ankle injuries, concussion management, and sports specific core strengthening.

Program Director:

Gregory M. Mathein, M.D.

Received his B.S at State University of New York, in association with Syracuse University in 1983 and M.D. at State University of New York Health Science Center in Syracuse in 1986.

He completed his internship of General Surgery and Residency of Orthopaedic Surgery at State University of New York Health Science Center in 1987 and 1991. After completing his fellowship at Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic in 1992 he began his practice and helped the Sports Medicine Program to evolve.

Dr. Mathien currently serves as the senior Team Orthopaedic Surgeon for the University of Tennessee Athletic programs, which involves caring for both the U.T. Men's and U.T. Women's athletes in all sports. Now with over 20 years experience caring for UT athletes he has operated and cared for many Olympic medalist and professional athletes.

He is an active participant in national sports medicine research, the Multi-center ACL Revision Study. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is subspecialty in sports medicine and is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Speakers:

Jason McVeigh MS, PT, ATC

Jason is in his sixth season as Director of Sports Medicine at Tennessee, and his 13th overall with the UT athletics department. He has been a member of the UT Sports Medicine staff since 1999, when he joined the Vols as the Director of Rehabilitation. He gained his Athletic Trainer Certification in 2000, and was named Head Athletic Trainer in 2006.

Under his supervision, the UT Sports Medicine department has added several key features to assist in the care of UT student-athletes. These include the addition of a Team Physician's Clinic, an on-site X-ray unit, baseline echocardiograms and concussion testing for all student-athletes, a revised substance abuse testing policy, an expanded state-of-the-art physical therapy clinic, as well as development of Team EXCEL, a multi-disciplined program aimed at addressing the complex behavioral health needs of the UT student-athlete.

Jason graduated Summa Cum Laude from UT in 1996 with a B.S. degree in Biology and a minor in Biochemistry. He then went on to receive his Master's degree in Physical Therapy from Duke University in 1999. He is a member of both the American Physical Therapy Association and the National Athletic Trainers Association. He currently serves as the chair of the Editorial Review Group in Athletic Training for Doody Enterprises Inc., as well as being a member of the Client Advisory Board for Aegis Sciences Corp. He is Board Certified in Sports Physical Therapy by the American Physical Therapy Association, and has spoken at several local and national sports medicine conferences on topics related to both physical therapy and athletic training.

Amber G. Luhn, M.D.

Dr. Luhn graduated magna cum laude with a BS in Biochemistry from the University of Georgia in Athens; she went on to complete her medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. While there, she served as a member of the Student Government Association and earned the Harry O'Rear Outstanding Student in Pediatrics. Following an internship and residency in General Pediatrics in Augusta, Dr. Luhn completed a fellowship in Pediatric Primary Care Sports Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. While doing her fellowship training, she served as assistant team physician at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She also earned the opportunity to speak on the female athlete triad for the Women's Virtual Library at UTHSCSA and was invited to present her research abstract at the American College of Sports Medicine National Meeting in Denver, Colorado.

As a pediatric sports medicine specialist, Dr. Luhn enjoys helping young athletes overcome or manage their medical conditions to return to play and take their sport to the next level. Using her talent in science to help others, Dr. Luhn especially appreciates the energy and motivation of the young patients she has the opportunity to treat.

John Dean, MPT, SCS, ATC

John is beginning his sixth year as the Director of Rehabilitation with the UT Sports Medicine staff. He is a board-certified clinical specialist in sports physical therapy and provides rehabilitation services for UT student athletes. Prior to coming to Tennessee, he worked for the Athletic Association at the University of Florida where he was responsible for treating injuries to the football team. He was also an instructor in the Applied Physiology and Kinesiology Department, teaching a course in rehabilitation. He previously was a staff athletic trainer at Southern California, working with the football and baseball programs, including the Trojans' 2003 national champion football team.

John graduated Magna Cum Laude from San Diego State University in 2000 with a degree in kinesiology. He completed his Master's degree in physical therapy at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Dean is an experienced clinician and educator who is active in the National Athletic Trainers' Association and the American Physical Therapy Association and has been an invited speaker at numerous regional and national conferences.

Robert E. Ivy, M.D.

Attended Stanford University in Palo Alto California obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree in 1983. He was awarded the prestigious Justin Potter Academic Scholarship to Vanderbilt Medical School and received his medical degree from Vanderbilt in 1988. Dr. Ivy was elected to the Alpha Omicron Alpha medical honor society.

Dr. Ivy began his post-graduate education with a one year general surgical internship at Vanderbilt. He continued his education with four residency program in orthopedic surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Ivy completed his training with a one year fellowship in hand and micro-vascular surgery at the nationally renowned Indiana Hand Center in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Dr. Ivy joined Knoxville Orthopedic Clinic in 1994. He sub-specializes in the treatment of hand and elbow disorders. Dr. Ivy has been selected by his peers to the "Best Doctors in America." In addition, he was voted by Cityview Magazine to the top doctors in Knoxville for 2003. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and has obtained the Certificate for Added Qualification for Surgery of the Hand. Dr. Ivy is a member of multiple medical societies including the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Justin Shinkle, MS, ATC

Justin is the full time Certified Athletic Training at South Doyle High School. Prior to joining Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic, he completed his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training at Dakota Wesleyan University. Justin also received his Master of Science in Athletic Training from Indiana State University, where he served as a graduate assistant to the athletic training department for two years.


Chris A. Klenck, M.D.

Prior to becoming a physician, Dr. Klenck earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. After practicing pharmacy for two years, he then went on to earn his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. Staying on in Indianapolis, Dr. Klenck completed an internship and residency in internal medicine/pediatrics at Indiana University Medical Center where he served as Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Chief Resident and received the Outstanding Medicine-Pediatrics Resident Award. He then completed his formal medical education with a fellowship in primary care sports medicine, also at Indiana University Medical Center.

With a particular passion for working with active individuals and athletes, Dr. Klenck enjoys helping his patients recover from an injury or illness and successfully return to their sport or activity. As an adult and pediatric sports medicine specialist, his special interests within his field include exercise-induced asthma and pre-participation screening of athletes.

Carolyn Pendergast, OT, CHT

Occupational Therapist and Certified Hand Therapist with 12 years experience in hand and upper extremity rehabilitation and the fabrication and fitting of upper extremity orthotics. Carolyn has been an occupational therapist since 1999. She graduated from the University of Tennessee with a BS in 1995 and earned a Masters of Occupational Therapy from Texas Woman's University in 1999. Carolyn earned the specialty designation of Certified Hand Therapist in 2003. She specializes in treating disorders of the hand and upper extremity.


Continuing Education Credit:

Athletic Trainers: Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic is recognized by the Board of Certification, Inc. to offer continuing education for Certified Athletic Trainers. BOC Approved Provider #P3122. 6 CEU's will be awarded.

Physical Therapist: This program has been submitted to the Tennessee Physical Therapy Association for 6.0 contact hours.
