Edwin E. Spencer Jr., MD, originally hails from the coast of North Carolina and completed his undergraduate education at North Carolina State University, graduating summa cum laude. He then graduated from Duke University School of Medicine with distinction. He completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Michigan, graduating with honors, and then finished a fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. While in residency and fellowship, he authored numerous research papers and book chapters and was inducted into the prestigious society of American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. His subsequent research efforts won Dr. Spencer the Charles S. Neer Award, the highest award in shoulder surgery, in both 2011 and 2013.

Dr. Spencer specializes in all types of shoulder and elbow surgery. That includes replacements, revision replacements, reconstruction of the upper extremity, deformity cases, arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs, and all other forms of arthroscopic surgery. Dr. Spencer not only performs these surgeries, but also teaches courses for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons as well as at the Orthopaedic Learning Center. He also specializes in caring for the throwing athlete and treating baseball injuries. Dr. Spencer's team includes Jeff Jarnagin, PA, and Anita Davis, LPN.

Dr. Spencer has won many awards, including being voted by his shoulder surgeon peers as one of the "Top 28 Shoulder Surgeons" in the USA. He's also been voted a Knoxville "Top Doc" by Cityview Magazine, elected to the "Best Doctors in America" list, selected as a "Castle Connolly Top Doctor," and been named a "Leader in Total Joint Replacement: Generation Next" by Orthopedics Today.

Dr. Spencer has helped design several different kinds of shoulder replacements, including a stemless shoulder replacement that is the first of its kind in the USA. He also worked to develop a glenoid component (cup side of the joint) that helps prevent bone loss. In addition, Dr. Spencer pioneered reconstruction of the sternoclavicular joint, and was awarded a patent for a proximal humeral fracture fixation device.

Dr. Spencer also continues his research with MOON (Multicenter Orthopaedic Outomes Network) which started more than a decade ago. The group most recently received NIH funding for a landmark study to evaluate the best method to treat atraumatic rotator cuff tears. This study involves 12 centers around the country.

Dr. Spencer has enjoyed becoming involved in the East Tennessee community. He has joined the Executive Board of the Great Smoky Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts of America with pride, as he is an Eagle Scout himself. He and his wife Tracey have two wonderful children who are involved with STAR (Shangri-La Therapeutic Academy of Riding) and Knox Youth Sports.

A note from Dr. Spencer

My practice strives to provide the highest quality and most compassionate patient-centered orthopaedic care. This begins by carefully listening to my patients as they describe the details of their particular ailments and understanding how these issues interfere with and limit their quality of life. Patient education is an important aspect of my practice philosophy. Medicine has become increasingly specialized and can often be very complex with the advent of more novel treatment options. In my experience, an informed patient who is well educated regarding their particular diagnosis is much more engaged and empowered throughout their treatment process. This ultimately improves their outcome.

What patients say about Dr. spencer

  • Absolutely top notch. Dr. Spencer repaired a complete rotator cuff tear in my shoulder. He explained the procedure from beginning to end. And took the time to answer any questions I had. He's truly amazing. I would and will highly recommend Dr. Spencer and the entire staff at KOC. Thanks again.
    – Robert, Powell
  • Thanks to my care at KOC, I can use my arm at work with no pain and have the best mobility that I have had in years. The outcome far exceeded my expectations. I would recommend Dr. Spencer and his team to anybody. Throughout my visits to KOC and the surgery, I was treated very well and felt that everybody involved cared.
    – Mike, Bean Station
  • Thanks to my care at KOC, I can keep working and enjoy life at 74 years of age. Two shoulder replacements, one in 2010 and the other in 2016 by Dr. Edwin Spencer. There are no words that can describe how successful these surgeries have been.
    – Joe, Greeneville
  • Thanks to my care at KOC, I can move my arm all around now without pain. I'm gaining strength by going to PT. Follow orders and you won't have a problem. Love Dr. Spencer and his entire team. I highly recommend them!!!!!
    – Sharie, Crossville
  • Thanks to my care at KOC I now have use of both arms again. Dr. Spencer replaced my right shoulder in February 2019 and then in December 2019 he did a shoulder replacement on my left shoulder. Dr. Spencer and Jeff Jarnagin are a Godly team that are masters at their jobs and they treat you like you are the most important patient in their care. They explain every step of the way from the initial shots to leaving the hospital. Both surgeries were done at Tennova Turkey Creek and I was able to go home the same day of surgery both times. The pain I experienced was unbelievably low both times. I feel very blessed to recommend Dr. Spencer and his team. They are your A TEAM.
    – Delbert, Maryville
  • I have had reverse total shoulder arthroplasty and have had zero pain with it. I had surgery on Dec.13, 2018. I was released from the hospital the next day. I didn't have any pain that night, but took one pain pill just to make sure the pain didn't get ahead of me. I took one half the next morning and one half pain pill that night. Still never had any pain. The next morning, I took a Tylenol and went to church. I took another Tylenol that night and never took anymore. I didn't have any pain at all, not even from the incision. I was driving in four days. I am 72 years old and at ten weeks out I could do anything I wanted to do as long as I watched the weight of it. I cannot thank Dr. Spencer and his staff enough for giving my quality of life back.
    – Danny, Tazewell
  • A few years ago I started having serious pain in my shoulders and at times I could hardly lift my arms above my shoulders. I was scheduled to see Dr. Spencer and Jeff Jarnagin PA at KOC. After X-rays were taken Jeff Jarrigan started injections in the joints to relieve the pain. Jeff never one time failed to hit the joint the first time with no discomfort. He helped me to be able to function for months and months before finally having to do surgery. A Godly man who explains what he can do and one who really cares for you. Jeff Jarnagin and Dr. Spencer are one amazing team. Both were with me before the shoulder replacement surgery, during surgery and after surgery. I was even allowed to go home the same day of the surgery. All through the surgery and physcial therapy the pain has been very very minimal. What a pleasant experience to be able to look forward to a doctor's visit.
    – Delbert, Maryville
  • Thanks to my care at KOC, I can now do almost everything with my shoulder! Almost 100% mobility, can lift heavy things again. I had two previous surgeries from doctors that did me wrong and have suffered for 5 years from their surgeries. Dr. Spencer worked a miracle on me and I'm now waiting to get my right shoulder done. He and his PA-C Jeff Jarnagin have been so kind and reassuring to me and I really feel that I am cared about. I highly recommend him to anyone with shoulder problems, in fact, I already did and my friend was told not to have surgery. Now that's amazing coming from a surgeon in my opinion. The office people are also first rate.
    – Elizabeth, Newport
  • Thanks to my care at KOC, I can live again. Dr. Spencer is a Godsend! This surgery was my fifth surgery and I must say, the best of all my previous experiences. He is a true professional in every sense of the word! He not only made my day, he’s given me my arm back. And what a team! Jeff and Anita make this team the “A” team! Thanks so much!!
    – Wayne, Cosby
  • I had torn my tendon and bicep in March of 2018. My first surgery wasn't at KOC and that's another long story. I found Dr. Spencer 7 months later still with lots of pain and very low mobility. He did a capsular release on me which is getting a lot, and I mean a lot, of scare tissue out so I could hopefully get more mobility. He did a great job on my shoulder. I couldn't be happier. I ride horses and it means a lot to me that I can throw my 23-pound saddle on my horse. Dr. Spencer I can't thank you enough. I'm pain free and that means the most to me. Thank you Dr. Spencer for giving me my life back. I now can do what I wanna do with my horses. This past Saturday I rode 22 miles on my horse. It was great.
