J. Christopher Sherrell, M.D., MSC.

Joint Replacement Orthopaedic Specialist

Dr. J. Christopher Sherrell returned to Tennessee in 2009 to practice medicine with Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic.

His interests in the area of adult reconstructive surgery include treatment of degenerative, inflammatory, and post-traumatic arthritis and fractures of the hip and knee. He has co-authored a number of articles on these topics for publication in professional journals and has participated in numerous presentations at medical conferences across the country.

An alumnus of Bearden High School in Knoxville, Dr. Sherrell graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis and then completed two years of general surgery residency there. He did an orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville and his fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte. His mother worked as a nurse in the Knoxville area for 40 years, and she shared her values in the area of patient care with him. From his father, he learned “how to fix almost anything.”

What patients say about Dr. sherrell

  • Thanks to my care at KOC, I canbcut my lawn with a walk behind mower two weeks after my surgery. I had heard numerous recovery horror stories related to total knee replacements regarding pain and length of time needed to get back to normal. I was amazed I could walk virtually pain free hours after my surgery. I only needed a walker one day after my release from the hospital. Of course, my knee was swollen for a few days, but it went down with the assistance of the ice machine which recirculated cold water around my knee. My follow up physical therapy program has gone well and in two weeks I could bend my knee to 130 degrees. Awesome! Prior to my surgery I did the suggested exercises to strengthen my muscles and I'm sure those helped. My results may not be the norm, but I am very pleased with them. Two weeks after the surgery I cut my lawn with my walk behind mower and, according to my app, walked 1.75 miles. Praise the Lord!

  • Thanks to my care at KOC, I can live without pain. I have had replacement on both hips. I had a bad experience with the left one, which was done in Kingsport. Then thank God I met Dr. Sherrell at KOC. He did the right hip, which has never given any trouble whatsoever. I would highly recommend Dr. Sherrell. I feel he's at the top of the best list.
